Atlas Shed FAQ
What makes Atlas Shed different from other shed builders?
Atlas Shed focuses on quality construction, durable materials, and practical designs that provide long-term value. Every shed includes premium features such as LP SmartSide siding, CDX plywood flooring, redwood trim, architectural shingles, and solid foundations as part of the standard build.
Can I customize my shed?
Absolutely. We offer a variety of customization options, including shed size, door styles, window placement, paint colors, shelving, workbenches, and other upgrades. Our goal is to build a shed that fits your property, storage needs, and budget.
What sizes are available?
Atlas Shed offers several standard shed sizes and can also provide custom sizes to accommodate unique spaces and storage requirements. If you have a specific location or footprint in mind, we'll work with you to find the right solution.
What materials do you use?
We use quality materials selected for durability and performance, including LP SmartSide siding, CDX plywood flooring, Douglas Fir floor joists, redwood trim, and architectural roofing shingles. These materials help ensure your shed remains attractive and functional for years to come.
Do you provide installation?
Yes. Atlas Shed builds and installs sheds throughout the East Bay and surrounding communities. Installation is included in the listed shed pricing.
Can I install a shed in my HOA community?
Yes! Check with your HOA for submittal requirements.
Once you have an Active Quote Atlas Shed, we will provide the required drawings to your HOA. You will then need to forward to the responsible persons/organizations.
Note: an Active Quote Atlas Shed is a quote on which a 10% deposit has been made.
Does Atlas Shed do free on-site consultation?
No. Our on-site consultations are a paid service. We ask that customers scheduling a consultation have a genuine interest in moving forward with a project if the consultation answers their questions and meets their needs. The consultation fee helps cover the time and expertise required to evaluate your site, discuss options, and provide professional recommendations.
How do I pay for an on-site consultation?
Please contact Atlas Shed to discuss current consultation rates. In some cases, fee reductions or other accommodations may be available based on your project and circumstances.
When will I receive my shed?
The process begins with a detailed quote that includes pricing, project details, and answers to any questions you may have. Once you're ready to move forward, you can secure your project with a 10% deposit.
After the deposit is received, your delivery date will be confirmed. In most cases, the expected timeline is discussed before you make your decision, so you'll have a clear understanding of when to expect your shed.
Need your shed by a specific date? Let us know during the quoting process, and we'll discuss available scheduling options.
What do you mean by "materials sourced locally"?
When we say "materials sourced locally," we mean that we purchase many of our building materials from local suppliers and businesses whenever possible. While some products may be manufactured elsewhere, buying through local suppliers helps support our community's economy, jobs, and businesses.
Isn't "materials sourced locally" misleading if some products are manufactured outside the area?
No. The phrase refers to where the materials are purchased and supplied from, not necessarily where every raw material or product was originally manufactured. By sourcing materials through local suppliers, Atlas Shed helps strengthen the local economy through business partnerships, employment opportunities, and tax contributions that benefit the community.
Why does Atlas Shed emphasize local sourcing?
Supporting local businesses is part of our commitment to the communities we serve. Whenever practical, we work with local suppliers to provide quality materials while investing back into the local economy.
Are Atlas Sheds resistant to rodents and pests?
Yes. Atlas Sheds are designed and built to help resist rodents and common pests through a combination of quality construction, durable materials, and thoughtful design. Key areas of the shed—including the base, corners, doors, windows, and roof perimeter—utilize redwood, a naturally durable wood that is less attractive to many insects and pests.
While no structure can be guaranteed to be completely rodent- or pest-proof under all conditions, Atlas Sheds are built to minimize opportunities for unwanted visitors when properly maintained.
To maintain the highest level of protection:
- Keep doors and windows closed when the shed is not in use.
- Regularly inspect the shed as part of routine maintenance.
- Keep grass, weeds, vines, shrubs, and tree branches from growing against the shed.
- Avoid storing food, pet food, or other pest attractants inside.
If you ever notice signs of pest or rodent activity, we encourage you to contact Atlas Shed promptly so the issue can be evaluated and addressed. With proper maintenance and landscaping practices, Atlas Sheds provide excellent long-term resistance to pests and rodents.
What sets Atlas Shed apart from other types of sheds?
That's a great question—and one we hear often.
If you've ever searched online for "sheds near me," you've probably seen hundreds of options. There are custom shed builders, big-box retailers, prefab sheds shipped from across the country, and even off-site storage companies. With so many choices, it can be hard to know what's actually different.
What sets Atlas Shed apart is our focus on building a shed that fits your property, your needs, and your space.
Many companies offer a fixed selection of sizes and layouts. Atlas Shed specializes in custom solutions, especially for properties with tight access, fence-line installations, unusual dimensions, HOA requirements, or other site constraints. In fact, many of our customers come to us after learning that other providers couldn't accommodate the size, location, or design they wanted.
We also take pride in:
- Custom designs tailored to your specific property
- Building in spaces where standard shed options may not fit
- Quality materials sourced through local suppliers whenever possible
- Direct communication throughout the project
- Supporting local businesses, jobs, and communities
At the end of the day, Atlas Shed isn't trying to sell you the closest available shed. We're focused on building the right shed for your property—and making sure it works for you for years to come.

What Others Are Saying

I highly recommend Tom Hechmer and his team at Atlas Shed. I ordered a 10’ x 4’ lean to roof style shed for our home in Alameda. During the initial inquiry and ordering process Tom was responsive and had answers to all my questions. After my initial order, Tom kept me apprised of the status of our build and worked with me to select paint colors and door hardware to match our home. Delivery was right on time and on-site assembly and fine-tuning install work took just two days. Tom made terrific suggestions for customizing our shed with shelving and a work bench that look great. The carpentry and detailing is top notch and the shed looks and functions exactly as I had hoped. Atlas even includes a heat reflector panel on the underside of the roof to help control heat levels within the shed. Tom is clearly a contractor who takes pride in his work. Great value for the money.

The Atlas team built two beautiful sheds for us within a week as promised and at the exact estimated price. I'd recommend Atlas to anyone shopping for a shed. I was very impressed with the personalized service. A+

Good experience. Only company to offer removal of old shed and build custom size shed. Paid more but I like the end result. Tom really cares about his product.

We needed a shed built underneath our deck. Unlike all of the other shed companies I called, Atlas Shed was willing to work within the awkward space. Tom and his team built a beautiful shed, maximizing the storage space and working within my budget. Atlas Shed may not be the cheapest option, but it is certainly the best! You get what you pay for with Atlas Shed.
